Minority Bar Association of Western NY.
The Minority Bar Association of Western New York, Inc. ("MBAWNY"), is an organization comprised of minority attorneys in Western New York, whose goals are to protect the civil rights of all people, and to enhancement the legal services available to minority communities. The MBAWNY also provides scholarships and mentoring programs to students, and educational and professional support to minority attorneys and legal professionals.

Welcome

Welcome! The Minority Bar Association of Western New York, Inc. ("MBAWNY") celebrates its 39th anniversary this year and we are privileged to remain an integral part of Western New York’s legal community. As this year’s President, I welcome you to find out more about us and to let us know if you’d like to be involved in expanding our organization’s growth and its contributions to our community.
You may already know that MBAWNY is a growing organization; our membership of nearly 100 is comprised of members from diverse ethnic backgrounds and practices across Western New York. Importantly, MBAWNY aims to increase the number of minorities in the legal profession and increase professional opportunities for our members. We are so fortunate to have a strong relationship with the University at Buffalo Law School and with the Bennett High School Law magnet program. If you’d like to join us in mentoring local minority law students; training and/or judging student moot court competitions or co-sponsoring law student events, please contact us! Our Foundation provides scholarships to students pursuing careers in the law and we hold an annual dinner to support the Foundation’s endeavors.
This year’s MBAWNY Executive Board is comprised of attorneys with an aim to serve. Our Vice-President, Sheldon K. Smith serves as a Board Member and 2nd Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee for Meals on Wheels for Western New York, Inc., while our Treasurer, Tasha Dandridge-Richburg, serves on the ECBA’s Negligence and Admissions to the Bar Committees. Our Recording Secretary is Lynnette Nogueras-Trummer, whose practice has included working for Greater Boston Legal Services and our Corresponding Secretary, Christopher Hayes, serves local civil service organizations through pro bono work. Finally, our 2009 Directors are Minryu Sarah Kim and Roxanne Mendez-Johnson. Ms. Kim is a Pick of the Crop Board Member and volunteers with Lawyers for Learning and NY Cares. Ms. Mendez-Johnson is an alum of Teach for America and serves our community through her work as a Federal Defender in the Buffalo, New York office.
I am privileged to lead such an exceptional Board and am exceedingly grateful to have served the organization as Vice-President with MBAWNY’s Immediate Past President, Tasha E. Moore. Thank you for your tireless work ethic and for your continuing leadership.
While MBAWNY continues to dedicate itself to our minority community through legal services and through both student scholarship and student mentoring programs, this year I aim to foster a commitment to diversity pipeline initiatives which focus on fulfilling a child’s dream to enter the legal profession. For those of us new to pipeline programs, pipeline initiatives is simply a term referring to the various “pipelines,” so to speak, that take people from an early age into various professions, such as the legal profession. Perhaps we’ve always known that educational opportunities, role models and a host of other factors work together to take a child and turn him or her into a lawyer; however, this year we are not only going to know this, but we’re going to actively and collaboratively work to create innovative educational opportunities, provide role models and mentor students at an earlier age to help ensure that minority students remain in the pipeline and succeed in accomplishing a career in the legal profession. I hope you’ll join our efforts and support us along the way. Thank you for visiting with us.
